I have finaly decided on a topic for my web design project.
For my site i have decided to do a websites dedicated to “Student Food” the idea being students have to cook food that is easy, cheap and quick my site will fill the gap in the market should be easy to follow and help the student lifestyle. I have verious ideas allready for my piece such as using a corkboard for the background and having the navigation on a sticky note and content handwritten on paper.
Started my research by googling “Student Recipes” and the first site is a prime example of a good student cooking site. http://www.studentrecipes.com is the site i have found this site is very well designed using typical “student humor” in the header with an obvious photoshoped character. Also it looks like my idea of sticky notes have also been used howevr i belive on this site it looks ok wheread on mine it will seam more natural aswell as mine will have writting that looks like it fits on paper realisticly. The Navigation is spread across the top of the page into catogries each with an indiviual color with a slight “neon” look this works as it represent the student viberant personailty. Once you click on a link the site is slightly less impressive all pages have the same columns to each side of the content and the content is on a sheeet of paper with uninspiring and almost browser style links. I can build on this as each page of my site will be similar however have slightly nicer feel to it.
In an example completly diffrent http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/ have a successful website with a lot of recipes and a lot of viewers. This site is aimed at a different viewers meant for people who watch cookery programs on the BBC. This site is slightly more confusing with lots of images competeing for your attension and a jquery image gallery in the middle with recipes. The place where BBC really shines through is its layout for recipes first an images of the food you are making then a list of ingredients followed by the prep instructions. The only improvement on this lay out that i can think of was to introduce pictures of the process aswell as a section for cookery equipment needed.
This reseach has given me an idea on where to head with my assignment i will start the design process and aim to get my index page up and running by wednesday.
Just read through the brief once again and decided to start my reseach into typography.
Obviously typography plays a major role in any websites due to the amount of text on screen so naturally if you make the text more intresting the page becomes more intresting. Typography also plays a major role in all other media’s from newspapers to advertising.
The internet arguably the biggest resource for research allowed me to find a web page called Thinking with Type this site has loads of details regarding typography such as Kerning (spacing), size, tracking (spacing across a line) and much more the author of the website also has written a book also called Thinking with Type. I will be checking to see if we have this book in the library tomorrow and if so this will be my main research for the first brief.
It was the first official lesson of web design on 07/Oct/2011 and i have to say it was amazing couldn’t have gone better just didn’t want the lesson to end.
In the first lessons of web design we covered starting up a mark up using only a plain text editor in this case we used text wrangler. The XHTML looks quite natural everything has logic behind it and seams to make sense however this is just the first lesson and i have no doubt this will be getting much harder. I also like the idea of not just cheating and using Dreamweaver this means by the end we should be able to produce professional websites and maintain them.
After the lesson was over I went up to the library and collected a book suggested by Shelly called HTML and CSS Web Standards Solutions a Web Standardistas Approach. This is the following Sunday night and I already have read through to chapter 6 and WOW it is amazing so far covers all that one needs to know for basic HTML web design. I have read past where we are up to with lessons however I have not being doing the H/W as until now have not had computer access but i feel like the knowledge it has passed on is amazing and will reinforce all my lessons work. This book might just have to be brought as iam sure it will always prove very useful. A note to all co students who haven’t read the book and are doing the web design course it is well worth the read it does not feel boring as the language is user friendly everything from basic’s to advance is explained and best of all its not dry it actually quite humorous in most parts.
Looking forward to the next lesson with Shelly if the book is anything to go by it probably will be adding images, Tables and inserting links all look very fun and hopefully I can put the book to good use.
p.s. the picture below is of the book and also provides a link to buy the book for all intrested.
After being inspired to look at awful websites in lesson ive decided to look on http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com for examples of “how not to do it”
After 5 mins i came across this one http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com and wow plenty to work with here
As you can see from the picture below its covered in many colours different font’s clashing colour and a small navigation. The very typical word art font also animates making the screen feel like its constantly moving and distracting to try and read. The navigation is not the worse with roller over enlightenment on each one and set in a obvious place however the left hand side of this is also partially see-through making it harder to read.
After viewing this websites i looked at a few other again all terrible mainly colour problems seaming to be the major problem amongst bad websites i then found this website http://www.bhwellnessctr.com/about.htm. The website however in most respects i belive to be ok however the navigation is awful there are 4 main pages easy to see and use however if you look below there are 8 colour bars which are actually links to the other pages with only small writing next to it to give an idea of where you are going the thought “Mystery meets navigation” comes to mind.
First lesson and already excited for web design word press is awesome and easy to use.
The schedual for the year looks great and looking forward to all the coding!!!
and one last thing during the last 5 mins i realised you could make your own headed using gradient tool quickly threw together the header above and it worked 😀
