I have now finished my piece and would like to sum up the process I took to get where I am now (17 attempts later). I first sketched out about 4 ideas in a book (now lost so unable to scan pictures in) Then went into illustrator to start some initial designs (see first 4 attempts below.) The first (circled confused around 4 question marks) I really liked I belived it was creative and original however due to it being to “confusing” to read decided not to use this option and try another from my sketches. The second attempt (individual letters spread around page with arrows linking them together) was again too confusing and just looked to random as if they where just placed anywhere creating no logical order however I did like the use of arrows almost monopoly style. To create more order to this style I tried a third attempt (sets of letters in line with arrows) this was easier to read however was very plain and in order I wanted it to have a little more confusion. The fourth attempt was an evolution of the third taking its good point but improving them I angled the letters and I believed that it worked a lot better giving it a more stylized feel. All the attempts however lacked typography which I wanted to add in after as I believed just the lay out should give the impression of “confused” I played with different type fonts downloaded from “Dafont” however none felt right and I lost confidence in the piece so I scrapped the ideas and started again.
The last set of ideas I did are below. The idea was to take a font this I felt look how confused should look then place in an obvious order that people would have to look at for more than 2 secs to understand. The first attempt (jus the letters not question mark) was the main idea that the rest was based of. The second (letters with question mark not rotated) was going back and using the question mark to add a bit more punch to the piece and fill in the giant gap. The last one which is my final piece was taking ideas back from when I rotated a previous idea just making people work that little bit harder. Overall I am happy I believe the font works really well giving it a nice effect that gives the reader something to pull them in the angled letters and various size help creates the confused feel and question mark gives it an edge and the question mark is the biggest object and sums ups confusion really well.
We have now been given the final brief and have started work into it we was giving a list of emotion which we could choose one then using only that word and punctuation we had to give the word the emotion it said i.e. fear would have give the impression of fear. To start my research I choose my emotion “confused” then googled to get an idea of how other people portray confused most used wavy cheesy font I put this down a lot to confused.com which use this type of font in all adverts. I also noticed a lot of question marks popping up always quite a focus so I decided I would like to use this as the centre of my piece.
Have now started even more work with Illustrator where we was tasked to write our name in a creative way that shows our personality. The first idea I did (see pic below) was quite good or so I thought I used my name to create binary code which represents the computer side and coding that I enjoy the border and background color was simple to test out things in illustrator however although it was hard it wasn’t just my name it was an image so I moved on to a new one.
The next attempt I kept to the idea of coding however choose HTML coding. I took samples of the color used in actually HTML code and used them in the picture (see below) the font is also the HTML code default font although I believe less creative it stuck to the brief which is what it is about.
Started work with Illustrator creative characters unfortunately I missed the intro lesson on this so have been forced to catch up on my own with notes. I have played around with the knife tool and the text and am quite happy with the outcome. I created a set of building using only letters and I believe you cant really tell that its just letters except one or two minor errors. (unable to upload pictures due to compabiltiy issues)
Just read through the brief once again and decided to start my reseach into typography.
Obviously typography plays a major role in any websites due to the amount of text on screen so naturally if you make the text more intresting the page becomes more intresting. Typography also plays a major role in all other media’s from newspapers to advertising.
The internet arguably the biggest resource for research allowed me to find a web page called Thinking with Type this site has loads of details regarding typography such as Kerning (spacing), size, tracking (spacing across a line) and much more the author of the website also has written a book also called Thinking with Type. I will be checking to see if we have this book in the library tomorrow and if so this will be my main research for the first brief.
lesson was today (30/sep/2011) good intro to graphic design getting an idea what actully what is involved was not looking forward to this lesson however feeling a little more at ease
The work we looked at was intresting today defining art and graphic design in some places can be very hard and also comes down to personal beliefs and subjective to each individual.
We was set a task and the end of the lesson to search for one piece of graphic design this provokes an emotion or that we just respect to present at the next lesson
once at home and researching i came to a blank and i couldn’t think of anything that really hit me so i just stared searching adverts one that did hit hard was the picture below an anti smoking advert that each time i see makes me shiver which i suppose is the idea “shock value” hard hitting and provoking however was not sure on how much it was graphic design.
After ruling the anti smoking one out i looked into things i liked starting with music i searched films that i liked one i thought that would have interesting graphic design was Sin City due to originally being a graphic novel. The picture below is a poster highlighting a few main character and staying true to the neo noir feel of the film and which i believe truly set that genre and stylisation for many copy cats.
I will save the rest for my presentation and the following post to come however this was a good start to an interesting course.
